He’s turning pro.

The junior QB made his announcement on Monday via The Players’ Tribune.

“After a lot of prayer and thought, I have decided to forgo my senior year and enter the NFL draft. This has been the most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make. But no matter what happens next, I know I’ll never experience something as special as being a Tar Heel.

I want to say thank you to every single coach I’ve ever had, from my dad when I was just seven years old and I got excited every time I made the ball spiral, to Coach Fedora and his staff, who improved my skills and pushed me to a higher level as a player. My high school coaches played a huge role in my development as a quarterback. I’m lucky to have had them by my side, because they really set the groundwork for my confidence as a football player. It’s hard to get very far without the right mentors. To all of you: Thanks for being my guiding lights for so many years.

And to the UNC training staff and strength staff, and particularly to Coach Heckendorf, our quarterbacks coach: Thank you for trusting me and believing in me. I’ve developed into the quarterback I am because of you. (And a special shout-out to Coach Heck and his incredible wife, Ms. Mia — another amazing source of support and inspiration — for having twins this year. You better believe Uncle Mitch is gonna come back to Chapel Hill as soon as I can to see those boys!)

And finally, to the fans and my fellow students: Playing in front of you guys was a dream come true. You have made me smile and picked me up when I needed it the most. I’ll never forget how much you’ve done for me. We’re family. I’m proud to be associated with you.”

In his first season as the team’s starting quarterback, Trubisky went from being something of a professional afterthought, to being arguably the top quarterback prospect eligible for this year’s NFL Draft.

“He patiently waited for his opportunity to play at UNC and when that chance came this year, he had one of best seasons in school history,” coach Larry Fedora said in a statement. “We support his decision and look forward to watching him play at the next level.”

The Ohio native completed 304-446 passes (68.2%) for 3,748 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions.

While there are some criticisms about Trubisky’s current NFL-readiness, he’s undoubtedly making the right call in declaring for a draft that doesn’t have a clear-cut #1 option at the position.

WalterFootball currently projects Trubisky to be selected with the #6 overall pick in the first round, by the New York Jets.  In their draft, Trubisky is the second quarterback to come off the board, behind DeShone Kizer (#2 overall to the 49ers).

Plus, things would have been tougher for him had he returned to Chapel Hill next season as the Tar Heels are losing their top two running backs (Elijah Hood, T.J. Logan), top receivers (Ryan Switzer, Mack Hollins, and Bug Howard) as well as a pair of senior starters on the offensive line.

Currently, Trubisky’s hometown Cleveland Browns hold the #1 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and could be in the market for a franchise QB.

In his North Carolina bio, Trubisky said:

“If he could choose an NFL team to play for, it would be the Cleveland Browns.”
