We examine three teams who could be ready to turn things around
Last season, several teams improved their number of wins including the Indians, Nationals, Red Sox, Mariners, and Tigers. However, we will not be discussing those teams today – as those are the improved teams of last season. Every team has hope, but for these teams that are about to be listed, their club has some true potential.
Tampa Bay Rays (68-94)
Despite their horrendous record, the one thing the Rays have that many teams strive for is good pitching. Sadly, there is no offense to back up that fantastic pitching. To gain a decent offense this upcoming season (they ranked among 24th, 25th, and 27th in runs the last few years), they must trade away one of their pitchers for a much-needed designated hitter. If they manage to get that along with staying healthy – granted Dickerson and Souza Jr. are as good as they are projected to be, the Rays have a chance to compete for a playoff spot.
Colorado Rockies (75-87)
The projected Rockies’ rotation for this upcoming season is going to be legendary. Chad Bettis, Tyler Chatwood, Jon Gray, Tyler Anderson and German Marquez. The best part about them is that they’re all young – Bettis being the oldest at age 27. This allows them to all grow and build together. In combination with their superstar third basemen Arenado and right fielder Gonzalez, they have a strong possibility of being able to compete with the Giants and Dodgers this upcoming season.
Pittsburgh Pirates (78-83)
The Pirates may not be on the same level or caliber as the Cardinals or Cubs, but can they make the postseason yet again for the 4th time in 5 years? Yes. Their outfield tends to shine, including players such as Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco along with a strong rotation with players such as Gerrit Cole and Ivan Nova. Sort of like the Rays’ story, if they stay healthy and their players play at the level of their projection, they have a good chance at making the postseason again.
Worst to first? Maybe not quite, but these teams definitely have some serious potential to turn things around.
