The Nationals have made a move that adds Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson to their bullpen.

In an effort to improve their bullpen, the Washington Nationals have agreed to a deal with the Oakland Athletics that sends relievers Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madison to Washington.

In exchange, the A’s receive pitcher Blake Treinen and prospects pitcher Jesus Luzardo and third baseman Sheldon Neuse.

The Nationals bullpen has been terrible this season, blowing nearly one-third of its save opportunities so far.

Treinen actually began the season as the Nationals’ closer and currently possesses a 0-2 record with a 5.73 ERA and just three saves in 37 2/3 innings.  The 29-year-old was very good for the team in his previous three seasons while pitching middle innings as a reliever.

Sheldon Neuse, a 22-year-old third baseball was playing with the Hagerstown Suns in A-Ball.  In 77 games he’s posted a .291 average, along with a .349 OBP, 9 home runs, 51 RBI, and 12 steals.  MLB.com has slotted him in as the #11 prospect in the A’s organization.

Jesus Luzardo is a 19-year-old left-handed pitcher who has been playing with the GCL Nationals in Rookie Ball.  In 3 games he’s posted a 1-0 record with a 1.32 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP and 15 strikeouts in 13.2 innings.  Luzardo has yet to walk a batter this season.  MLB.com pegs him as the #15 prospect in the A’s system.

While this is a deal focusing on the future for Oakland, Washington is looking to win games now and sees Doolittle and Madson as key bullpen pieces.

Always good, Doolittle is enjoying what could be the best season of his career.  The 30-year-old currently boasts a 1-0 record with a 3.38 ERA and 0.66 WHIP in 23 games this year.  Doolittle has struck out 31 batters in just 21.1 innings while walking only 2.

Madson, now 36-years-old, has been even more dominant for Oakland.  In 40 games, the 6’6″ righty has posted a 2.06 ERA, 0.79 WHIP, and 39 strikeouts in 39.1 innings.  Madson saved 30 games for the A’s last season but has been used as more of a set-up guy this year.

The Nationals currently had a 9.5 game lead on the second-place Atlanta Braves in the NL East and strengthening their bullpen with a move like this makes that lead look even more insurmountable for Atlanta.
